About

People of Anne Arundel County have considered Cedar Hill Cemetery a peaceful, beautiful final resting place since 1874. History is reflected through the park's beautiful carved mountains, dignified statues and simple headstones. Scenic drives wind through Cedar Hill Cemetery's tree-lined landscape. Cedar Hill has attracted 1000s of visitors over the years, not only because of its picturesque grounds, but also because of the many dignitaries whose final resting places are within its gates.

A beautiful Baltimore cemetery

Nineteen gardens are found in Cedar Hill's historic Monument Section, and the cemetery has an extensive collection of historic grave markers. In the newer locations, special care has been taken to replicate the tradition and design of the Monument Section, the cemetery's oldest area.

History

Cemetery grounds at Cedar Hill CemeteryThe growth and development of Cedar Hill Cemetery attests to the vision of David Engel, its founder. On November 4, 1874, David Engel, a wealthy merchant of Baltimore City, purchased a tract of land in northern Anne Arundel County. Soon thereafter, Engel established the Cedar Hill Cemetery Company and became 1 of the 7 members of the Board of Directors.

David Engel’s involvement with the management of the new cemetery was short lived when he died at his home on May 25, 1875. After making generous bequests to his brothers and sisters, to several charitable organizations and to his church, David Engel specified in his will that he was to be buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

We now have 35 Gardens, freestanding mausoleums in the Garden of Honor and Apostles, 2 Chapel Mausoleums (which have crypts available both inside and out), and our Last Supper Mausoleum has 8 levels with all crypts on the outside.
